Research Methodology

Course Outline

This course introduces learners to the fundamental principles and methods used in scientific and academic research. Students will explore how research is designed, conducted, analysed and communicated across various disciplines.

The course focuses on research planning, data collection methods, analysis techniques and ethical considerations, highlighting how systematic inquiry contributes to knowledge generation and decision-making.

Learners will combine theoretical understanding with practical exercises to develop the ability to design and evaluate research studies effectively.

Course Description

Research methodology is essential for generating reliable knowledge and supporting evidence-based decision-making in academic, scientific and professional contexts. This unit introduces learners to the key concepts, tools and techniques used in research.

The course begins by exploring the nature and purpose of research, including different types of research such as qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods approaches. Learners will examine how research questions are formulated and how studies are designed.

The unit then focuses on data collection methods, including surveys, interviews, observations and experimental approaches. Learners will explore sampling techniques and considerations for ensuring validity and reliability.

The course introduces basic data analysis techniques, including descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis, enabling learners to interpret research findings.

Learners will also examine ethical considerations in research, including consent, confidentiality and responsible data handling.

The unit concludes with guidance on presenting research findings through reports and presentations.

Throughout the course, learners will develop practical skills in designing research studies, collecting and analysing data, and communicating results effectively.
